It is experimental without losing the focus on songwriting, it is immaculately recorded and it captures a band at an extraordinary creative peak, distilling their aims and ambitions perfectly. There is a clear reason for all of this Dark Side of the Moon is, quite simply, an incredible record. Dark Side of the Moon made Pink Floyd very famous and very, very rich. Not bad for a band whose previous album got to number 46 in the US and has sold less than one million copies. There are other statistics that seem simply mind-blowing – it spent 14 years in the American charts, has been certified 15 times platinum in the UK and has been preserved in US National Recording Registry after the Library of Congress decided it is “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”. It is also one of the most successful Dark Side of the Moon has sold in excess of 45 million copies, placing it firmly in the top five best-selling albums of all time. But album number 8 was to change all this and to change the lives of Pink Floyd forever.ĥ0 years after it was released, Dark Side of the Moon is still widely regarded as one of the best albums ever made. ![]() Until they released Dark Side of the Moon, Floyd were ambling along happily enough, turning out records that their dedicated fan base would buy in reasonable numbers and that were pretty much guaranteed to make the top ten in the UK and the lower reaches of the American charts. In these times of instant gratification, where success needs to be instant and bands can be dropped by record labels for not making a quick enough return on their investment, it is perhaps worth recalling that it took Pink Floyd 8 albums before they made their masterpiece. ![]()
